1. Nelson Mandela Passes away :

One of the most influential people in this planet, Mr. Nelson Mandela , passed away on 5th December 2013. Lovingly known as ‘Madiba’ by his people, Mandela was an anti-apartheid revolutionary and an ex President of South Africa (1994-1999).

 

2. The new Pope is elected :

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was elected as the 266th pope, whereupon he took the name Francis. He thus became the first pope from the southern hemisphere. Earlier, pope Benedict the XVI has resigned as pope, becoming the first person to do so since 1415.

 

3. The NSA leaks and Edward Snowden :

This year wasn’t a great one for the USA government. However the worst thing that happened to them was the revelation that the National Security Agency had illegally spied on US citizens and even foreign leaders. Edward Snowden, a NSA contractor was the man behind leaking this secret. He is currently living in Russia where he was granted a temporary asylum.

 

4. The Russian Meteor Strike :

A meteor exploded over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk on 15th February . It was the most powerful meteor strike on earth in over a century. Over 4300 buildings were damaged and nearly 1491 people were injured. The availability of many videos of the event made it one of the most watched event of 2013.

 

5. The Uttarakhand Flash Floods :

On 15th of June, the Indian state of Uttarakhand was struck by massive flash floods which took over 5700 lives and trapped over 20,000 people . The rescue operations took over a month and was completed with the aid of Indian Army and Navy.

 

6. Saudi Arabia Rejects UN Security Council Seat :

On October 18th , Saudi Arabia made a surprising move by rejecting a seat on the prestigious United Nations Security Council, making it the first country to do so. Instead, Jordan took the seat . The other countries which were given a UNSC seats were – Chad, Nigeria, Chile and Lithuania.

 

7. The Year of Malala :

2013 was a very successful year for the young braveheart Malala Yousufzai. After being shot in the head last year by a Taliban Gunmen, Malala rose to international fame post her recovery. She was a Nobel Peace Prize nominee this year and narrowly lost to the OPCW. Also, she published her autobiography “I am Malala” which made it to the bestseller list worldwide. She also won a number of awards this year like the prestigious Sakharov prize , the Ambassador of Conscience Award and the Clinton Global Citizen award to name a few.
